Katherine Mayfield was born on August 11th, 1941 in Statesville, North Carolina. Katherine transitioned from the physical world, entering the spiritual world at 9:22pm on November 28th, 2018 at the Milstein Building of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Katherine was the sixth of eleven children born to her parents, Sadie Bell and Jessie Mayfield.
Katherine was educated in the North Carolina Public School System, graduating from Unity High School. Shortly afterwards, she followed the paths of her beloved sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth, moving to New York City where she met her future husband, James Williams and became the proud mother of three children, La Fondia Shay, Kim Elondia, and James Tony Williams.
Katherine was known by many as Kathy, K, Aunt Kat and Nana. She was known for her love of the arts, theater, travel, hiking, her love of nature, plant and wildlife, volunteering at churches and various soup kitchens. She was also known for her infectious laughter, incredibly tight hugs and long, lasting loving phone calls. Her culinary skills were incomparable! She was known for preparing scrumptious feasts that would have people asking for seconds, thirds "and" a to go bag! Most of all, Katherine loved any event or holiday that she could use as an excuse to bring family, friends, and even strangers together to share ideas, memories, and to overall have a great time!
Katherine was preceded in death by her son James Tony Williams, and her six siblings, Eugene Mayfield, James Edward "Snookie" Mayfield, Margaret Gaskill, Nathaniel "Boone" Mayfield, Isaac "Mickey" Mayfield, and Pauline "Polly" Whiteside. Katherine leaves behind two daughters, La Fondia Shay Williams and Kim Elondia Williams, three siblings, Milton Mayfield, Elizabeth Jackson, and Mary Alice Mayfield, six grandchildren, Jason Williams (wife Erynn), James Williams (wife Lisa), Adrian Maurice Williams, Christopher Smith, Shonte Williams, and Alani Smallwood and two great-grandchildren, Layla Samaya Williams, and Phoenix Riley Sampson-Williams.
Katherine Mayfield was an amazing woman, a loving mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. While we will all miss her dearly, she will live on forever in our hearts!
