Obituary for Denise Arliska Kidd

Mrs. Denise Arliska Woods Kidd was born September 21, 1955, in Washington, DC. At the age of 17 she married Arthur Lee Moon and had three children, Arthur, Nickey, and Maurice. She was the daughter of Vernelle Catoe Butler and the late Benjamin Woods. She was married to Ronald Kidd, who survives. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two siblings, John Woods and Adrienne Holmes. She peacefully entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 2, 2022, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, North Carolina, surrounded by family.

She started her career early working for various companies and for Mayor Marion Barry in Washington, DC. She later began her career in Word Processing for various Law Firms in Washington, DC. In Washington DC, she progressed to supervisor and was a shining light at every lawyer’s office she worked for. She developed a love for playing bass in her late 20’s and cultivated her love for music gained through her family who were musically inclined. When she lived in Youngstown, OH, she joined a singing group and was featured on television at a talent show. In 2004 she made a bet with her son-in-law that if she went to church for a year they would move to Washington DC. That’s when she started going to Mount Victory Baptist Church where she became a choir director and was ordained as a minister.

She also travelled abroad when she was younger because her father was in the military. She lived in various places throughout her life but ultimately came to Statesville, NC to live with her daughter when her health began to decline. She loved writing plays, taught herself to play the piano, and used her talent for so many productions and her church. She gained her Associates degree in Business Administration in her 50’s proving that no matter the age you can still accomplish your dreams. In 2009 she partnered with Women of Jubilee and helped prepare and plan their first women’ conference. She held seminars for women to help them to reach their goals and coach them through life’s difficulties. Momma never met a stranger and just had a way about her that made everyone feel welcomed, loved, and accepted no matter what their struggles were. Everyone called her Momma or Grandma, even people who were as old as she was.

She leaves to remember and cherish her life, her children: Nicole "Nickey" (Pastor John Skipper Mott) Mott of the home, Arthur (Kimberly) Moon, Jr. of Washington, D. C. and Maurice (Joyce) Moon of Phoenixville, Pa.; two step-sons, Ronald Willis and Corey Slade, Sr.; her mother, Vernelle Catoe Butler of Phoenixville, Pa.; her stepfather, Bruce Butler, Sr. of Phoenixville, Pa.; her siblings, Karen Woods of Pottstown, Pa, Cindy Howard of Pottstown, Pa., Benjamin Woods of Pottstown, Pa., Ernest Woods of Fredericksburg, VA, Michael Woods of Washington, DC, Rev. Bruce (Donna) Butler, Jr., of Phoenixville, Pa; grandchildren, Latrice Stovall, Cherish Mott, John Mott, Jr., Jeremiah Mott, Josiah Mott, Doshan Moore, Joshua Moon, Kaylah Andrews, Calab Moon, Uriah Moon, Jomaree Moon, Derek Moon, Robert Young, Devaine Young, Naomi Moon, Kiya Moon and Trinity Moon, Maya Moon and Imani Moon; great grandchildren, Mila Mott, Zavian Mott, Evie Gonzalez, Cadence Stovall, Caleb Moon, Doshawn Moore, Devaine Young, Jr., Pryia Young and Dimere Young; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, neighbors and dear friends.

She gave her children a legacy that will last for generations to come. That of love! She was known for her love and sayings to her children like “that’s my baby”, “love you all the much everywhere”, and never goodbye but “see you soon”. And with that we say we will see you soon, Momma!
