Obituary for Dorothy Sturghill (Grimes)

Psalms 91:1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Dorothy Mae Grimes Sturghill, beloved daughter of Grover and Carrie Sherrill Grimes, was born in Iredell County on July 12, 1935. She transitioned this life peacefully on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at the Gordon Hospice House of Statesville following an extended illness.

She was a graduate of Unity High School and was employed with Iredell Statesville Schools as a custodian and Mitchell Community College as the hospitality coordinator until her retirement. At an early age, she was a member of Clark’s Chapel Baptist Church. At the time of her death, she was a dedicated member of Holsey Memorial CME Church where she served faithfully, as a Missionary. She was actively involved in the Kitchen Committee which she had a great passion of decorating the Fellowship Hall for various events. She was also a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary.

She was united in marriage to Cordell Sturghill, who preceded her in death. In addition to her husband, Cordell and her parents, Grover and Carrie Grimes, she was also preceded in death by two daughters, Constance “Conkie” Parker and Donna Sturghill; two sons-in-law, Reginald Tatum and Reginald Parker; three sisters, Helen Murdock, Mary Murdock, and Maggie Parker; six brothers, Bill Grimes, Will Murdock, Bobby Grimes,Roy Murdock, Jimmie Murdock, who was reared in the home, and Joe Grimes; four brothers-in-law, Herb McMahon, Charlie Parker, Shane Rosby and Jimmy Summers; five sisters-in-law, Lucille Grimes, Virginia Grimes, Connie S. Rosby, Lizzie S. McMahon, and Lovenia S. Summers.

She leaves to cherish the memory of her life, three daughters, Kathy Grimes, Sheila Tatum and Robin Sturghill; two sons, Gary (Abigail) Sturghill and Todd (Kim Dalton) Sturghill; one brother, Jay (Geraldine) Grimes; eight grandchildren, Carlos C. Sturghill, Shannon Grimes, Carmal Sturghill, Monique Dalton, Tony Peet, Todd Sturghill, Jr., Larry Rivers and Octavia Rivers; great grandchildren, Daisyah Sturghill, Camiel Sturghill, Za'vion Torrence, Ja'veon Jones, Dailen Woods, Drew Woods, Chattney Dalton, Kamari Dalton, Mariah Peet, Tyler Rivers, Marlee Rivers, Ji'sire Rivers, Justice Sturghill, Tajah Sturghill and Trace Sturghill; special nephews, Leonard Kinney and Freddie Sturghill; special friends, Patty and Richard Cassell, Emmaline Bellamy, Margaret McNeeley, Velva Stevenson, Frankie Freeze, and Dr. Laurel Eason; a special Goddaughter, LaFreda McLelland; her caregivers, Irma Abraham and Geraldine Grimes; a special granddaughter and caregiver, Carmal Sturghill; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, church family and friends.

Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at Christian Outreach of the Piedmont. Glenn Usry is Pastor and Reverend Barbara McCullum, Pastor of Holsey Memorial CME Church will officiate. Mrs. Sturghill will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 1:00 p.m. Members of the family will receive friend at Christian Outreach of the Piedmont from 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., but will assemble at the residence at other times.
