Mr. James Edward Stevenson peacefully departed this earthly life on Friday, December 30, 2022 at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Statesville, North Carolina. Mr. James Edward Stevenson was born May 30, 1942 to the late Will and Vera Stevenson, Olin, North Carolina.

James Stevenson was educated in the Iredell County School System. He attended Houstonville Elementary School and graduated from Unity High School, Class of 1960. He was a life-long member of Siloam African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Statesville, North Carolina.

James Stevenson was a great provider for his family. Throughout his career, he worked for various companies; Davis Hospital; Uniglass; Southern Screw and in 2005 he retired from his last place of employment, Rexam Can Company, Winston Salem, North Carolina.

James was nicknamed “Jam-up” by his parents and his wife and children affectionally called him “Jay” and he was known by his grandchildren as PaPa. During his earlier years, he enjoyed playing baseball with the teams of Harmony and Southern Screw. His hobbies were working in the yard and planting a rose garden. He enjoyed teaching his grands about working on vehicles, in particular, trucks; he was instrumental in the life and well-being of his beloved wife, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, James “Jam-up” was preceded in death by three sisters: Doretha Dalton, Brenda Dalton and Faye Stevenson. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Sylvester Stevenson; a sister-in-law, Maxine Powell Steele; a son-in-law, Kermit Holmes and brother-in-law, Robert Lee Dalton.

James leaves to cherish the memory of his life, his wife of sixty years, Mrs. Velva Stevenson of the home; three children, Wanda Holmes, Crystal Stevenson and Eddie (Tabatha) Stevenson; grandchildren, Derrick (Anna) Stevenson, Marcus Holmes, Tyler Stevenson and Brandon Stevenson (Katherine); great-grandchildren, Sofia Stevenson and Max Stevenson; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Stevenson; his siblings - a brother, Willie (Edna) Stevenson of Harmony, sisters: Cynthia (Dennis) Campbell, Statesville; Eura Stevenson, Statesville, a brother-in-law, Lonnie Steele of Olin, NC; and a sister-in-law, Betty Valentine of Statesville. James “Jamup” is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
James (Jam-up), (Jay), (PaPa) will always be remembered for the wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend that he was. We will cherish all the family gatherings that we all enjoyed. We will remember how he called each of our names and we will always recall his laughter and his favorite word –“good gracious”.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2022, at 1:00 pm at Rutledge and Bigham, Statesville. Visitation will be from 12:00 - 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Reverend Robin Williams will be officiating and Reverend Kinston Jones will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow at the Siloam AME Zion Church Cemetery, Olin, NC.
