Obituary for Naomi Huitt (White)

Naomi Tyson White-Huitt, born May 16, 1926 in ClaremontNorth Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on January 13, 2021, after a short period of declining health. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Sattie Tyson. During her formative years Naomi attended public schools in Catawba County and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from North Carolina Central University.

She was an educator for 38 years at Rosenwald, Sherrills Ford, Maiden, Rohoney and Claremont Elementary Schools.

She was a member of Martha’s Chapter #25., The National Council of Negro Women, NAACP, Claremont Library Club and numerous other organizations.

Naomi married her beloved Ralph Lee White who passed away in 1985. She later married George Huitt who also predeceased her.

In addition to her family, Naomi was deeply committed to her church, Smyre’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion in Catawaba, NC, where she served on many boards and committees.

Naomi is survived by her son Michael of Claremont, one sister, Clara Tyson Carson also of Claremont, and a host of other nieces, nephews, and relatives.

Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Thursday, January 21, 2021, at 12:00 noon at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, 603 South Center Street, Statesville, NC 28677. Rev. David Rankin will officiate and a private burial will follow in the Smyre’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery in Catawba, NC

A memorial will be planned for a later date to celebrate her life and accomplishments.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund at Smyres Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, 100 6th Ave SE, Catawba, NC 28609.

There will be NO PUBLIC VISITATION (WAKE), unfortunately, with the COVID-19 Virus. We, at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, along with other funeral homes across the country, have been issued a mandate to limit the number of family and/or friends at funeral services.
