In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Keith G. Chambers.
Sam leaves to cherish the memory of his life, his beloved wife, Illora Rankin Chambers of the home; a sister, Prudence Mavis Chambers of South Boston, VA; his mother-in-law, Mary Rankin Derr of Statesville, NC; his brother-in-law, Eric (Mary) Rankin of Hickory, NC; his niece Jontae Tyshawn (Leon) Buxton of Winston-Salem, NC; his nephew, Eric Rankin, II of Hickory, NC; his godson, Dontre Smith of Alexandria, VA; three great nephews, Braylon Buxton, Peyton Buxton, and Mason Buxton, all of Winston-Salem, NC; a host of cousins, other relatives, friends and his beloved “service dog” Banksy.

In Loving Memory
I thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday, and days before that too.
I think of you in silence, I often speak your name.
All I have are memories, and your picture in a frame.
Your memory’s my keepsake, with which I’ll never part.
God has you in his keeping, I have you in my heart.
Submitted with love, Illora

I am deeply saddened to her of Sam's passing. He was such a great friend. I recall visiting with him and his parents on South Boston in 1979. I looked forward to the time when we could reconnect in our later years and share stories of life. So will cherish the memories even more. Condolences.

I met Sam and his wife when he came to work with The City of Goldsboro. Over those years we had many laughs and good times. He loved construction and spent a lot of time with the Inspection Department. He built a house while he was here, and we all tried to help him through it. I'm very sad to hear the news of his passing. I really liked him and always thought of him as a good friend. I'll remember him as a good man who enjoyed life and conversation.
