Obituary for Sequoia Chamon "Poodie" Cotton

Ms. Sequoia Chamon Cotton, 26, was born in Charleston, S.C. on June 2, 1996, to the late Bobby Alphonso Cotton and Celeste Lynn Lopez Cotton. She departed this life on Saturday, December 24, 2022, in Statesville, N.C.

Sequoia was affectionately known as “Poodie” by her family and friends. She graduated from Statesville High School with the Class of 2014 and was employed at Outback Steakhouse. She was baptized at Piney Grove AME Zion Church, and she loved to “fire dance” and play games. Poodie was known mostly for her Big Smile and always bubbly personality. She enjoyed video games as well as board games with family and friends. She was a bright spirit who never met a stranger. She was genuine and happy and will forever be missed.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandmother, Beneva Lopez; aunt, Stephanie Cotton Allison; June and Jonah; and Oaklynn.

She leaves to cherish the memory of her life, her mother, Celeste Lynn Lopez Cotton; grandmother, Mary Cotton of Statesville; one brother, Zaquaze "Zac” Cotton of Statesville; four sisters, Camille Cotton of Mooresville, Ebony Dawkins of Fayetteville, Taliah Wilson of Statesville, and Becky Kennerly of Red Springs, NC; aunts and uncles, Montell (Vera)Walker of Green Bay, WI, Albert (Linda) Burrus of Chicago, IL, Venila Webb of Jacksonville, FL, Maria Sykes of Memphis, TN, Eliza (James) King of Memphis, TN, Loniel Lopez of Chicago, IL, Shelia Kennedy of Jacksonville, FL, Yolanda (Fred) Jackson of Memphis, TN, Sharon (Richard) Cain, Joyce (Ronnie) Chambers, Monica Kinney of Statesville, Rodney (Chenille) Garner, Michael Cotton of Concord, Kassana (Anthony) Cotton of Statesville, three nieces, Nakyla Heaggans, Aria Cotton, and Aleysa Hernandez; a nephew, Syncere Heaggans; her dog, Vicious of the home; best friends, Olivia Lee and Rosetta Smitherman; and a host of other family members and friends.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Christian Outreach of the Piedmont, at 12:00 pm. No visitation. General Viewing will be on Tuesday, January 3, 2022 at Rutledge and Bigham from 4:00 - 7:00 pm.
